Ann is well-known throughout the world for her polar expeditions and adventures, including the 1992-93 American Women's Expedition to Antactica. Nancy Loewen and Ann teamed up to co-author a book about the journey, Four to the Pole! (LinnetBooks),a 2002 Minnesota Book Awards nominee in "Youth Literature". Mary has written two novels, a memoir, a book of poetry, and a young adult fiction book entitled Dancing With an Alien. Sociology Professor at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota and one of the foremost experts on genocide and cultural tragedies; he co-authored The Genocidal Mentality: Nazi Holocaust and Nuclear Threat and The Holocaust and Strategic Bombing and is interviewed in 1998 at the Marshall Writers Festival by Beth Weatherby of the Southwest State University Creative Writing Department. #449 Harold Kahm (Henry Sackerman)
"Minnesota's Oldest Professional Writer", 94-year old Harold Kahm has been writing since the 1920s in a variety of genres. From early contributions to True Confessions, he then wrote a number of nationally-published business economics books, such as How to Make Money: A Book for Boys and Young Men and 101 Businesses You Can Start and Run, and a book with radio pioneer Robert DeHaven, How to Break Into Radio. Later, he wrote a number of "popular fiction" ("pulp fiction"to some) books under the penname Henry Sacherman. He adapted one of these books, The Crowded Bed, into a play which was performed at Acadia Cafe & Theater. John Townsend, Director of the play, talks to Harold in the South Minneapolis home he lived in for 84 years; video clips of the play are shown. (29:00)

A literary contest was part of a project of 1000 Friends of Minnesota encouraging appreciation of the state's natural, cultural and historic areas. This program presents readings of the winning essays at the Open Book Literary Center; the essays were published by Milkweed Editions—Voices for the Land: Minnesotans Writing About the Places They Love — and printed in a Star Tribune newspaper series along with photographs of the special places in the state the authors wrote about.
