For over thirteen years and through nearly 500 half hour episodes, the Northern Lights TV series has featured Interviews with or Documentaries about a wide variety of Minnesota writers, artists, publishers and many others involved in the rich literary culture of the state.  The series has featured many of Minnesota's most well-known and beloved writers including Jon Hassler, Patricia Hampl, Bill Holm, Robert Bly, Frederick Manfred, Meridel LeSueur, Tom McGrath, 
Kate DiCamillo, Eugene McCarthy, Louise Erdrich, John Sandford, Judith Guest,
Mary Higgins Clark, Gary Paulsen and many others.
Interviewers were selected based on their knowledge of or interest in the author or subject.

• Episodes #1 — 348

{Produced 1988-1995}
The series began in 1988 as Northern Lights & Insights and was produced by Hennepin County Library in conjunction with the Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA); the program series was one of the first series to air regularly in prime time on Metro Cable Network/Cable Channel 6 throughout the Twin Cities metro area.

 

• Episodes #349 — 438    {Produced 1996-1999}
The series continued as Northern Lights: A Look at Minnesota Books and Writers and was produced by Minnesota Center for the Book, the state affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, and Metronet, the consortium of Twin Cities metropolitan libraries.  Metro Cable Network (MCN) and St. Paul Neighborhood Network (SPNN) were production partners.
• Episodes #439 — 489    {Produced 1999-2002}
The series was produced by the Minnesota Center for the Book as part of the Minnesota Humanities Commission.  Funding was provided by Target Stores and the Elmer L. & Eleanor J. Andersen Foundation. 
St. Paul Neighborhood Network continued as a production partner.
